The Magic of Mexico Image of Bahia de Matenchen

Hi, my name is Carrie Bishop. That is me on the right in the pic below with my friend Maria who also took this course.

I’m a freshman at Murray State College located in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.

When I enrolled in Mexican Ecology and Culture, I never imagined that it would change my life so drastically. The class itself was great but the actual trip to Mexico was by far the best thing I have ever experienced.

We traveled 30 hours from Tishomingo to San Blas, Mexico for 4 days of research, but it became so much more than just that. It was a time of learning, laughing, growing, and fun.

During our four days of research, we learned about the mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish of San Blas through hands on experience.

Living and working with the Mexican people was very rewarding in itself. I learned much about the Mexican Culture and made some life-long friends.

Through my week in San Blas, I found a part of myself I never knew existed. I felt at peace within myself. All my problems I had to face when I got back to the United States seemed to disappear. Nothing mattered but the present. I felt great about myself. It was a wonderful feeling. When I got back to the United States, and finally did have to face reality, I did so with a renewed sense of hope.

If you have MS PowerPoint Animation, you can see a little presentation I gave for a local gradeschool group. It is at the bottom of my page.

I sincerely hope that this class is offered in the future so that others like me can be as fortunate as I was to experience the "Magic of Mexico."

Carrie
